Timing Belt

The use of a timing belt in BikeOn's design ensures precise and efficient power transmission. We chose using timing belt, because these belts are known for their durability and low maintenance requirements compared to traditional chain drives. They offer smooth and silent operation, reducing the wear and tear on the bike’s drivetrain. By integrating a timing belt, BikeOn guarantees a seamless and consistent riding experience, which is crucial for maintaining the longevity of both the bike and the electric assist system.

Backpedaling

BikeOn features an intuitive backpedaling mechanism that enhances user control and safety. The motor and sensors monitor changes in chain tension, and the motor stops operation as soon as you stop pedaling. If the rider starts to backpedal, the motor detects this action and assists by rotating the cassette in reverse. This provides a riding experience that is very close that of a regular bicycle in terms of pedal dynamics.

BikeOn and Bicycle Sprockets

While making design decisions, we opted for attaching BikeOn to the sprockets because it allows the device to be attached in seconds with no tools and efficiently drives the hub. Adding an e-drive to the rear wheel is the most effective way of adding an e-drive to a bicycle. The compromise was losing the 1-3 largest gears on the cassette. The rationale behind this decision is that with the motor's added power, cyclists won't need the largest gears anyway. However, BikeOn preserves the ability to shift between the remaining gears, ensuring that riders still have versatile gearing options to suit various riding conditions.
